When Thunder Roars
By Melony Teague
(an excerpt from “As the Ink Flows”)
The disciples went and woke him , saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” He got up, rebukes the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. (Luke 8:24)
A low rumble of thunder woke me. It was followed by a flash of lightening and a much louder thunder’s roar. I turned to my husband and said, “Wait for it.” It was only moments before both of our kids were at our door asking if they could jump into our arms. My son then counted the seconds between lightning flashes and the thunder in order to gauge how far away the storm was.
Instinctively , my children knew where to go to feel safe. They knew that we would be waiting to welcome and enfold them. In no way would we ever consider saying to them, “Go Away!” to deal with their insecurity alone.
When life’s storms come your way, what is your instinctive response? Do you believe that your Father in heaven has arms open for you? Believing that God would in some way expect you to deal with your fears on your own is accepting a lie. Has God not already given the only begotten Son for you? Why would the Lord withhold comfort and refuge?
When thunder roars in your life, when you feel that you are living through a storm, run to hour heavenly Father. God is waiting to give you refuge. Even better, our Creator is able to still the storm.
Dear Jesus, please take my hand. Guide me to the safety of our Father’s arms when storms overwhelm or frighten me. Thank you. Amen.
